Jonathan J. Bortin

Let us keep in prayer the family of Jonathan James Caldwell Bortin, 26, who died on Monday, December 4, 2017. Jon is the son of Rev. Dorothy Caldwell, pastor at Community United Methodist Church in Massapequa, NY and Rev. Benjamin Bortin, of Port Washington, NY. Jon was born August 10, 1991 in Newark, NJ. He grew up in Staten Island, NY attending P.S. 45 and I.S. 61. In 2003 he moved to New Paltz, NY. He excelled in math and science in school, graduating from New Paltz High School in 2009 with 37 AP credits. He attended the University of Albany from 2009 to 2012, where he majored in physics and psychology. While in college he played ultimate Frisbee. Jon loved to play chess, ride his bike, listen to and make music, cook, read The New York Times, work as a lifeguard, swim and play video games. He was a lifelong Kingswood camper, camping there every summer for over 23 years. Jon’s wit, humor, intellect and compassionate heart will be missed. Jon is survived by his mother, Rev. Dorothy Caldwell; his father, Rev. Benjamin Bortin, of Port Washington, NY; his sister, Rachel Bortin, of Oswego, NY; his best friend, Tim Oldmixon, of Jersey City, NJ; his grandmother, Beverly Bortin, of Walnut Creek, CA; and aunts, uncles and cousins throughout California and Texas. A service to celebrate Jon’s life will take place in mid-January. There will also be a remembrance of his life at Kingswood Camp in the summer. Bortin’s life will be held on January 20th, 2017 at Community United Methodist Church in Massapequa, NY at 1:00pm. All of Jon’s Family and Friends are invited to come celebrate the time he spent with us. The service will be starting at 1:00pm and a celebratory meal will follow. Jon had the ability to leave a lasting impression on everyone he met. He was always kind, witty, and enthusiastic. Everyone who attends is encouraged to share a memory about Jon or the impression that he left on you.
