Sheldon "Shelly" Schneider

In Loving Memory of Sheldon “Shelly” Schneider 5/4/37–7/21/26 With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Sheldon Schneider, affectionately known to all as “Shelly.” Shelly was the kind of person who made everyone feel like family. His warmth, generosity, quick wit, intellect, and genuine interest in others left a lasting impression on all who knew him. He truly loved his life and loved “his people,” and they loved him right back. To his family, Shelly was far more than an uncle. He was a mentor, a trusted confidant, and one of life’s greatest friends. To his great-nephews and great-niece, he was an extra grandparent—always offering encouragement, wisdom, laughter, and unconditional love. He celebrated the successes of those he loved and stood beside them through life’s challenges. One of Shelly’s greatest passions was basketball. He began coaching in the Consumers League, where he mentored young athletes and shared lessons in teamwork, discipline, and character. He also taught and coached basketball at Brooklyn Technical High School, ran a college recreation program at NYIT, and served as a trusted advisor to the head basketball coach. Recently inducted into the NYC Basketball Hall of Fame, Shelly was honored for a lifelong dedication to the game and the many lives he influenced through it. Shelly also cherished summers at Tyler Hill Camp, where he ran the waiters group and coached them in basketball. He built friendships and memories that lasted a lifetime. He loved “the ponies,” found joy at the racetrack with friends in addition to being a devoted San Francisco Giants fan no matter where he lived. Shelly also enjoyed success in sales of electronics while living in San Francisco… a city he truly loved. Beyond sports, Shelly had a deep love for the arts. He enjoyed jazz, theatre, and ballet, and introduced many of us to the richness of the arts. Shelly believed life’s greatest riches were the relationships we build and the way we make people feel in our presence, and he lived that philosophy every day. Through his stories, advice, kindness, and humor, he made people feel seen, valued, and loved. Though our hearts are broken, we take comfort in the memories he leaves behind. His legacy lives on in the lessons he taught, the laughter he shared, and the love he gave so freely. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all the lives he touched. May his memory forever be a blessing.
